rip maurice sendak

maurice sendak, along with a.a. milne, was one of my first inspirations. i understood that he understood that i — a child — felt violent, felt sweet, felt not always able to tell my imagined world from the real one. he understood the child’s multitudes, a child’s darkness, how quickly it could shift to joy. how completely i relate to the child who ate the drawing. sendak understood that children, that we, are animals. he delighted in it.
